What the future of E-commerce looks like in Asia

22 July 2026 | Ziwei Huang

From groceries delivered in minutes to personalised shopping journey, Asia's e-commerce future is becoming faster, smarter and more personal.

Imagine running out of milk before breakfast, needing ingredients for dinner at the last minute, or comparing products online and not knowing which option to choose. Across China, Singapore, Thailand, India, and Japan, e-commerce platforms are evolving to solve these everyday challenges more seamlessly than ever before. Faster delivery, AI-powered recommendations, localised services and greater transparency are reshaping how e-commerce looks like in Asia.

Faster delivery becomes the new norm

E-commerce players are trying to make their platform more accessible to shoppers through faster delivery.

In Singapore, Lazada-owned RedMart has introduced a new grocery delivery service, offering selected customers grocery delivery in as little as 30 minutes. The service is designed to address urgency and unexpected moments, positioning RedMart as a go-to platform for both everyday groceries and immediate needs, while helping customers save time on errands.

Taobao, one of China’s largest e-commerce platforms owned by Alibaba, has introduced Taobao Instant Commerce, a feature that integrates merchants and delivery rider network directly into the Taobao app. Shoppers can order drinks, snacks, daily essentials and groceries without switching to a separate food-delivery platform. With delivery typically promised within 60 minutes, Taobao brings traditional online shopping and immediate daily needs into one place.

As e-commerce players compete to meet increasingly immediate needs, one-hour delivery may become a new industry norm.

Understanding local rhythms and lifestyles

While speed is becoming a key differentiator, success also depends on how well retailers adapt to local lifestyles and consumer needs.

In Thailand, Lotus’s App aims to enhance the customer experience by understanding shoppers’ purchasing behaviours. For urban families without a car, Lotus removes the hassle of carrying heavy loads by delivering bulky essentials straight to their doorstep.

Lotus has identified, through extensive data analysis, that 8:00–9:00 AM is the peak period for fresh milk and drinking water orders, while 4:00–5:00 PM sees the highest demand for fresh proteins such as pork and chicken. This reflects the shifting daily needs of a household. Thai families are moving away from weekly bulk stock‑up shopping towards smaller baskets and more frequent replenishment trips.

Supported by over 2,500 branches nationwide, Lotus ensures that customers can access fresh produce anytime during the day within just one click.

Beyond speed, understanding local lifestyles and meeting last-minute household, dining and social gathering needs can boost a retailer's local competitiveness.

From typing to talking: a more intuitive shopping experience

Future e-commerce growth can be unlocked by removing friction from the shopping journey.

In Japan, Rakuten launched an AI concierge within its app to help shoppers discover suitable products through natural conversations. Users can share their budget, intended use and preferences through text, voice or images, allowing the AI to deliver more relevant recommendations.

Swiggy, a major quick‑commerce player in India, has partnered with Sarvam AI to roll out voice‑based ordering in 11 regional languages. Sarvam's speech models enable users to order food, book restaurant tables, and browse Instamart groceries entirely through natural voice commands.

Conversational interfaces reduce the need to type and search through multiple pages. By supporting local languages and voice commands, AI lowers barriers for users who are less comfortable with text-based apps, making it easier to order food, shop groceries and book restaurants.

Trust shifts from a background promise to visible service

Meituan, one of China’s leading e-commerce platforms, is making delivery assurance more visible to consumers through its ‘Instashopping Assurance Programme’. For example, for flower orders, the platform introduced a pre-delivery photo feature, allowing merchants to send real-time photos to shoppers when the order is ready.

In India, Zepto introduced Real Lens to make online grocery shopping feel more transparent. Shoppers can view real-time images of the fruit and vegetables available at their selected nearby store. This helps reduce uncertainty around freshness, appearance and quality, which are often difficult to judge when purchasing produce online.

Greater transparency around product quality, delivery and payment will help consumers feel more confident making online purchase decisions.

Looking ahead

The future of e-commerce in Asia will be defined by how effectively platforms can integrate speed, convenience and relevance into everyday life. Consumers are no longer comparing online retailers solely on price or product range; they increasingly expect services that can respond instantly to their needs. Whether through one-hour delivery or AI-powered assistance, e-commerce is becoming more deeply embedded in consumers’ daily routines.

At the same time, growth opportunities will vary across markets, requiring retailers to adapt to local languages, lifestyles and shopping behaviours. Trust will also become an increasingly important differentiator. Greater transparency around product quality, delivery performance and payment experiences can help shoppers feel more confident when purchasing online.

Ultimately, the future of e-commerce in Asia is not just about selling products online. It is about creating seamless, personalised and trustworthy experiences that fit naturally into consumers' lives. The retailers that succeed will be those that anticipate needs, remove friction and deliver value at every stage of the customer journey.
