PLMA 2026: Amsterdam’s must-see stores

Our analyst’s pick of the top stores to see in the Dutch capital.

PLMA is taking place at the RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre on 19-20 May 2026 and there are plenty of stores in the city to provide inspiration for retailers and suppliers.

Albert Heijn XL: Gelderlandplein 47, 1082 KZ Amsterdam

The larger-format flagship store of Ahold Delhaize carries around 30k SKUs and caters to a broad demographic including affluent shoppers, families, and expats.

Look out for:

  • Elevated private label ranges, such as Care in health & beauty and Delicata in confectionery.

  • Digital screens used extensively throughout the shopper journey.

  • Strong value messaging used throughout, signposted with its distinctive orange Bonus fixtures and gondola ends, and on digital screens.

  • Convenient meal solutions, including fresh meal kits and ready-to-eat solutions.

  • Health and sustainability focused initiatives, such as hybrid protein products.

Jumbo Foodmarkt: Gedempt Hamerkanaal 223, 1021 KP Amsterdam

The store is described as the largest Jumbo Foodmarkt in the Netherlands, housed in a converted industrial warehouse next to cultural venue De Kromhouthal.

Look out for:

  • The modern store design that makes strong use of the warehouse's original features, as well as natural lighting.

  • The broad range of freshly prepared meals from its Foodmarkt concept, that can be enjoyed in the in-store café or wrapped to take home.

  • Despite the stores upmarket look and feel, it offers good value and particularly stands out for its inexpensive prepared options.

SPAR University VU: De Boelelaan 1081, 1087, 1081 HV Amsterdam

SPAR University VU is a campus-focused convenience store, serving students and staff of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Look out for:

  • The range perfectly meets the needs of students on the campus, offering quick meals, affordable grab-and-go snacks, and essentials that fit a busy schedule.

  • The money saving benefits of using its app-based loyalty programme are well communicated.

  • Prominent sustainability messaging, helping to educate shoppers and influence sustainable behaviour.

The Danish variety discounter is known for selling everyday essentials and popular brands at consistently low prices.

Look out for:

  • Maze-like store layout, which encourages shoppers to pass through the entire store on a ‘treasure hunt’ experience.

  • A wide assortment at fixed low prices, with a focus on health & beauty.

  • ‘Trending treasures’ section, showcasing the latest social media trends.
