Choithrams brings a new convenience model to Dubai Metro

21 September 2026 | Oliver Butterworth

Convenience grows in Dubai as Choithrams launches Quickerr to serve the city’s diverse Metro commuters.

Choithrams has introduced its new Quickerr convenience banner across Dubai’s Metro, following ENOC ZOOM’s decision to withdraw from several station locations to refocus on its forecourt retail business. Quickerr is a compact, commuter-focused format built around what the retailer calls “quick purchase missions”.

The convenience channel is growing quickly in Dubai as shoppers look for faster, closer-to-home options. Quickerr’s name reflects this positioning, with stores typically sized between 200 and 400 sq. m in high-traffic commuter environments.

Decoding Dubai’s diverse commuter base

One of Choithrams’ biggest challenges is building a convenience offer that resonates with a wide mix of shoppers. Dubai Metro serves a diverse population, and Quickerr stores see heavy demand for ethnic and Asian specialities, such as Filipino ranges, to meet the needs of the city’s varied commuter base.

Affluence levels also vary significantly. While many professionals in Dubai rely on cars, the Metro is a key transport mode for lower-income workers who do not own vehicles. At the same time, some residents drive to outlying stations, park in underground facilities, and take the Metro into the city centre. Tourists also use the network extensively, and Quickerr stores cater to them with products such as Nol travel cards.

Because stores are small, Choithrams can adjust assortments quickly; one of the larger units pivoted its range within the first week of opening. Station managers also help maintain consistency and standards across locations.

Stations as micro-markets: range vs. mission

Choithrams’ strategy is to treat each station as a distinct micro‑market. Surrounding communities differ in nationality mix, income levels and daily routines, so Quickerr assortments are adapted accordingly.

Store placement inside stations also shapes missions. Units positioned at entrances tend to serve breakfast and early‑day needs, while exit‑side stores focus more on top‑up essentials and end‑of‑day purchases. The missions currently dominating include breakfast, hydration, top‑up essentials and last‑minute items.

Younger customers influence ranges in certain locations, particularly where stations sit near schools. With students recently returning to school after their summer break, Choithrams expects basket dynamics to shift and is monitoring how this affects assortment decisions.

Unlocking value through loyalty and private label

Before expanding into Metro stations, Choithrams had already taken over a handful of ZOOM convenience stores located inside Rove hotels, and it also operates convenience stores with Novotel in Abu Dhabi. Quickerr pricing is aligned with these hotel-based stores. Prices differ from Choithrams’ supermarkets because the product mix is tailored specifically to on-the-move shoppers, namely, a heavier focus on food-to-go and compact-format essentials.

The retailer is testing meal-deal combinations available exclusively to BOUNZ loyalty members (a points-collation programme), helping drive repeat visits and gather valuable customer data. Value is especially important for students, so the retailer continues to explore new combo structures and affordable ranges.

Private label also plays a role in value, though switching behaviour varies by category. Customers are more willing to choose private label for commodities and snacks, but less so for personal care essentials such as hand or face creams.

Choithrams holds the licence to sell Sainsbury’s private label in Dubai, which is recognised locally as a quality international brand. A small selection of Sainsbury’s products are available in Quickerr stores, particularly in the confectionery category.

Centralised freshness and the shift toward wellness

Quickerr stores are designed for commuters seeking fast, fresh options. While Choithrams’ supermarkets feature full on-site kitchens, Quickerr units lack the space, so sandwiches, salads, and similar items are prepared centrally and delivered pre-packed. Stores also offer fresh bakery items, which are delivered daily.

Despite their small footprints, Quickerr locations are expanding their healthier ranges, including loose bananas, fresh fruit, and wellness-oriented products. Protein drinks and gut health items are seeing strong growth, and larger Quickerr units now carry some of the wellness lines introduced in Choithrams’ supermarkets.

The future of mass-transit retail in Dubai

Convenience is Dubai’s fastest-growing physical retail channel, although much of this growth still comes from forecourt expansion. The Dubai Metro network is relatively small, less than a quarter of the size of the London Underground, so beyond the planned 28 Quickerr stores, scope for further Metro-based expansion is limited. Choithrams is in discussions with the Roads and Transport Authority regarding new lines under development, aiming to secure additional mass-transit locations in the future.

Dubai’s heat limits the practicality of standalone, walk-up convenience stores, making transit-linked formats far more viable than the traditional European walk-up model. Quickerr’s future growth will therefore depend on new transport infrastructure and other high-traffic environments where commuter missions remain strong.
