Value is rising up the agenda in South Korea. As Homeplus struggles, could the market be ready for a retailer to own discount grocery?
Korean shoppers are becoming increasingly value conscious as economic pressures continue to squeeze household budgets across the country. While South Korea remains one of Asia's most developed retail markets, value has become a growing priority, creating opportunities for retailers that can clearly communicate low prices and deliver consistent savings.
One thing that stood out to me during my time in market was the apparent lack of a genuine grocery discounter. While there are retailers operating adjacent to the space, South Korea does not have a player that fully replicates the proposition of Aldi or Lidl in Europe. This presents an opportunity for an existing retailer to evolve into that role, or potentially for an international operator to enter the market and take advantage of a gap that feels increasingly relevant.
