Impact in numbers (as at June 2021)
His Church has been redistributing surplus food since 2004, starting with a donation of 200 cans of surplus Heinz soup from Morrison’s. His Church redistributed over 2,200 tonnes of surplus food in 2020.
We are the biggest single site redistribution charity in Europe according to the BBC and have supported over 10,000 charitable organisations worldwide in the last 16 years.
Of the 5 million plus meals His Church redistributed in 2020, 500,000 were redistributed in partnership with Arsenal Football Club, supporting the Emergency COVID-19 Food Hubs of Islington, Camden and Hackney Borough Councils.
Industry partners
His Church work with most major supermarkets and food manufacturers in the UK. We work closely with WRAP and IGD and some of our redistribution projects are DEFRA funded.
What we do with the food
His Church redistributes surplus food both directly and through a network of charitable organisations who help vulnerable people, including food banks, homeless outreaches, children’s charities, schools, domestic violence refuges and community projects including football club community trusts.
Operations
His Church has its own transport and logistics infrastructure, with a fleet of over 30 vehicles including vans, 3.5T, 7.5T, 18T, 26T and articulated lorries (standard and temperature controlled). We regularly collect and redistribute food across all categories (ambient, chilled, frozen and fresh) all over the UK.
Wider network
His Church are a founding member of the XCESS (Independent Food Redistribution Network)
Key programmes
DEFRA funding administrated by WRAP is helping His Church extend its scope across harder to reach surplus food. For example, His Church are launching a project in 2021 which will incorporate the air blast freezing of chilled food before it’s “Use By” date, this food will be relabelled with a “Frozen On” and new “Best Before” date and redistributed as frozen food.
His Church can also de-label and relabel ambient food, where labelling issues are a barrier to redistribution.
Testimonial
“His Church’s support meant Arsenal FC could step up at a time when our communities needed us most. The whole club is incredibly proud of our partnership with His Church, especially the joint achievement of distributing over half a million meals in response to the coronavirus pandemic.”
Vinai Venkatesham CEO, Arsenal Football Club.
