City Harvest London

19 February 2022

Check out City Harvest's mission.

City Harvest’s mission is to reduce food insecurity and protect the planet by diverting quality, nutritious, edible surplus food from waste and redistributing it to those facing food poverty. The vision is to create cities where all people have access to fresh, nourishing food and no good food is wasted from within the food supply chain.

What we do with the food

Our 350 charity partners use the food in various ways: eg foodbanks, youth clubs and homeless shelters. Most prepare the food for meals, some distribute it to those who need it at home.

Operations

Food. We handle fresh, ambient, frozen and chilled.

We can collect within a 90 minute radius of our two bases in Acton and Leyton with our own vans or anywhere in England with a third-party haulier (minimum one pallet).

We can collect product up to its use by date and up to and past its best before date, giving extensions of up to three months depending on the product.

Wider network

Xcess.

Key programmes

Harvest for hunger campaigns, reaching out to farms and packers in the UK to intercept waste at source.

Own label manufacturers: looking to increase our brand in the retailer world and intercept surplus own label products from manufacturers.

Testimonial

"City Harvest really helps us by providing us with food that we would otherwise have to buy, which would use up our limited resources, so we would struggle to be able to provide the services we do.

"We’re not just feeding people, we’re nourishing them. Because of the diverse array of food you provide, instead of the kids just having chicken and chips, you provide fruit and vegetables that allow us to provide healthy meals.

"Because of COVID-19, our income has dropped by about a third - City Harvest lightens this load.”
