Selecting your redistribution partner(s)

13 July 2021

Everything you need to know to choose your redistribution partner(s)

This article outlines everything you need to consider when selecting and formalising your redistribution partnership(s). All information is based on WRAP’s Framework for Effective Redistribution Partnership, and IGD’s guide to Maximising Food Surplus Redistribution.

Selecting a partner for redistribution

Regardless of the size and the nature of your operations, there are options available that will allow you to redistribute your surplus food.

It may be beneficial to partner with more than one redistribution organisation: this can help to ensure there is capacity to cover any issues that arise and to maximise the amount of surplus you redistribute.

If you have a number of partnerships in place it’s recommended that you are clear on which organisation to use in certain situations. This will help to manage expectations and minimise any confusion between you and your redistribution partners.

By having discussions with redistribution organisations, you will be able to establish the types and condition of surplus they accept, their capabilities and capacity to receive surplus and any days they are unavailable.

During these conversations, the downloadable checklist below can guide you on the types of questions to ask and the types of information you may need to provide.

This will help you identify the redistribution partner(s) that will enable you to redistribute the greatest amount of surplus. It will also help you to identify the objectives you want to achieve, such as providing a social impact or a commercial return.
