What does the future of chocolate look like?

04 November 2026 | Siya Patel

Review into the recent volatility of cocoa prices, its broader impact on industry innovation and recent trends in chocolate.

At a Glance

Chocolate is a key product in seasonal, year-round holiday celebrations such as Valentine's Day, Easter and Christmas, as well as for everyday consumption.

However, despite its accessibility, in recent years, the cocoa industry has faced huge volatility in supply from the increasing impacts of climate change and low investment in the sector.

Industry brands such as Kerry have reformulated inputs to reduce reliance on the commodity, but others, like Mars and Nestlé, have worked with nature to try to increase yields.

Other industry trends such as an increase in mindful indulgence, functional chocolate, FMCG brands' portfolio diversification and the introduction of HFSS legislation in England already show signs of market disruption in how chocolate is produced and consumed.
