Best practice allergen labelling

23 July 2026

A collation of industry experience and expertise to create a summary of best practice, guidance and considerations for allergen labelling.

Consumers rely on manufacturers to provide safe food products with accurate food labelling to make informed, reliable decisions. Implementing uniform, best-practice allergen labelling across industry will foster a more secure and dependable environment for those living with allergies.

Allergen labelling was identified as a key area contributing to recalls across manufacturing. In response, a cross-industry project group have worked together to pool industry experience and expertise to create a summary of best practice, guidance and considerations that support manufacturers to drive improvements and mitigate risk.

The document covers three labelling areas:

  • Component labelling

  • Automatic labelling verification

  • Multi-retailer Precautionary Allergen Labelling (PAL)

“Many public food recalls are triggered by allergen mispacks. That’s why we invite manufacturers of all sizes to use this IGD best-practice labelling guide to improve component labelling, reduce mispacking risk, and strengthen food safety for customers”

— Felicity Ayleward, Senior Manager Buying Services, Aldi Stores Ltd
