Variety discounters: Engaging shoppers by delivering on multiple missions

11 August 2026 | Annie McGoff

How to meet evolving shopper needs, encourage additional spend and deliver value beyond price alone.

Variety discounters are benefiting from value-seeking and seasonal shopping, with 70% of shoppers having visited the channel in the last four weeks. Yet, in an increasingly competitive retail landscape, retailers must become a better destination for shoppers to complete multiple missions, helping drive repeat visits and larger baskets.

Value drives visits

Shoppers have adapted to higher prices by becoming more cost-conscious and selective with their spending. Many are shopping around to secure the best value, creating opportunities for variety discounters. Variety discount shoppers visit more channels and retailers than the average shopper, reflecting their bargain-hunting mindset. Across the six largest variety discounters, low prices are a more important driver of store choice than convenience, suggesting shoppers are willing to travel further to secure better deals.

However, the competitive price proposition does not necessarily translate into loyalty. Variety discount shoppers often visit multiple retailers to fulfil their needs, as they struggle to complete all their missions in one place.

Mission-led trips limit basket size

Whether purchasing health and beauty products or items for a home improvement project, shoppers are highly mission-focused. 47% said buying a specific item was their main reason for visiting a variety discounter, compared with just 5% who visited to complete their main shop. As a result, variety discounters are rarely the primary destination for a full grocery shop and tend to generate smaller basket sizes.

Driving secondary missions

However, not all variety discount shoppers behave the same. Shoppers whose most recent visit was to retailers such as Wilko, The Range and Poundland are more likely than the average shopper to shop across a wider range of channels and fascias, suggesting these retailers are often used for different shopping missions. Understanding how missions vary by retailer can help identify opportunities to encourage secondary purchases, increase basket spend and better meet shoppers' needs.

While price may drive shoppers into the store, convenience is becoming increasingly important. Shoppers are placing greater value on completing multiple missions in a single trip, creating an opportunity for variety discounters to drive basket spend. Intuitive store layouts, expanded food range, impactful seasonal displays and cross-category merchandising can encourage purchases beyond the original mission.

Converting browsing and justifying spend

Although many shoppers enter stores with a specific purchase in mind, low prices, promotions and the excitement of finding a bargain can encourage browsing and impulse purchases. These shoppers are often less planned than average and open to discovering new products. However, as spending becomes more considered, purchases need to feel justified. Relying on price callouts alone risks reducing impact, making it increasingly important for retailers to communicate value in more persuasive ways.

This reinforces the importance of effective retail media. Clear messaging, eye-catching displays and relevant promotions can help capture attention in-store, encourage discovery and show shoppers why additional products should be added to the basket.

While variety discounters are well positioned to benefit from bargain hunting and seasonal shopping, low prices will not guarantee loyalty. To drive basket spend and repeat visits, retailers need to improve the in-store experience, support multiple shopper missions and use retail media to justify spend.
