The Queen’s Speech given in Parliament on 10th May sets out the Government’s legislative agenda for the parliamentary year. It lists several new government bills to support economic growth to deal with the cost-of-living crisis, tackle crime and fund the NHS.

A detailed briefing note is available. Several of the planned bills have potential to impact UK food and grocery businesses, including the following:

Growing the economy to address the cost of living

Non-Domestic Rating Bill – Delivering a fairer, more accurate business rates system by modernising the system to allow for more frequent reevaluations.

Brexit Freedoms Bill – Ensuring adopted European Union regulation can be amended to meet the needs of the UK’s economy.

Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding Bill) – To promote the development of precision bred plants and animals to position the UK as a leader in agri-food research and innovation.

Providing the leadership needed in challenging times

Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill – Strengthening manifesto commitments concerning animal welfare, banning live exports and enhancing police powers to deal with livestock worrying.
