Preparing for DRS: Alpreva and Recyclever

Exploring Alpreva and Recyclever's Reverse Vending Machine solutions ahead of the UK's 2027 Deposit Return Scheme.

As the UK prepares for the introduction of its 2027 Deposit Return Scheme, EuroShop 2026 offered a first-hand look at some of the RVM technologies now available to retailers. In earlier articles, we explored solutions from TOMRA and Envipco, highlighting the diversity of approaches already available.

This diversity matters, as retailers will need flexible options that reflect their store size, return volumes and operational constraints. Choices made now will influence productivity and reduce risk exposure; shaping customer experience, operational simplicity and overall regulatory readiness.

This article continues that journey by focusing on two additional providers: Austrian manufacturer Alpreva and the UK’s first RVM producer, Recyclever.

Alpreva

Alpreva’s range offers three models designed to accommodate different storage capacities. Each are available in indoor and outdoor formats. In this video, they walk us through the 1000M, providing a clear view of the machine and how their core systems operate in practice.

Recyclever

Recyclever, the first UK-based manufacturer of RVMs, offers a three-model range designed for small footprints, straightforward installation and simple customer interaction. We’ve summarised below the key insights from our discussion with the team.

Core features of the machines:

  • Validation process: containers are validated through barcode, weight and material checks, supported by computer vision to assess shape and dimensions. Aligning with the requirements of DRS, crushed or non‑scheme items are rejected.

  • Sorting and compaction: once validated, containers are sorted into two fractions and crushed inside the machine to optimise storage.

  • Variety of refund options: retailers can offer either a standard voucher redeemable at the checkout or a digital reward via barcode or scanner. Customers can also choose to transfer their deposit refund directly into retailer loyalty points or rewards apps.

  • Retail media activation: optional high-brightness advertising screens, available on the 1000 and 1200 models, allow retailers to monetise supplier promotions.

  • Ease of installation: machines are designed to be plug‑and‑play, with intuitive use supported by a 360‑degree scanner that accepts containers in any orientation.

  • Service maintenance and lifecycle expectations: although fairly new to the RVM market, Recyclever highlights eight years of development and a service model aimed at prompt maintenance. Typical lifespan is estimated at between five and eight years before replacement, depending on usage and environment.

Conclusion

This series of articles exploring different RVM providers has made it clear that there is no single “correct” model for DRS. Retailers will need to make decisions based on their volumes, customer footfall, footprint constraints and operational realities. Those choices will directly impact how smoothly they navigate the transition in 2027.

What matters now is taking the time to understand what each store actually needs, from storage capacity to service expectations, and selecting partners who can support that journey in the best way possible. The market is maturing quickly, and while we’ve highlighted a handful of suppliers in this series, retailers should continue to monitor a broad range of options to ensure the best fit. Acting early and with clarity will be the most reliable way to reduce risk and be fully prepared for October 2027.
