More than a duopoly: what New Zealand supermarkets can teach the world

20 July 2026 | Tan Soo Eng

Learn how New Zealand retailers build strong recognisable brands.

While New Zealand's grocery market is often described as a duopoly dominated by Woolworths and Foodstuffs, I am most impressed by how distinct each banner has become. There is little confusion about who each banner is trying to serve.

Whether shoppers are looking for premium food, the lowest prices or a quick top-up shop, retailers have built strong recognisable brands that are easy to understand.

New World: the full-service experience

Fresh food takes centre stage. The produce and bakery look incredible, and the service counters encourage shoppers to browse rather than rush.

One feature that particularly stood out during my visit to New World Stonefields was its impressive deli. It is a destination in its own right. The counter is filled with an extensive range of freshly prepared sandwiches, wraps, salads and ready-to-eat meals, catering to everything from a quick lunch to an easy dinner solution. The quality of presentation rivals that of a specialist café, reinforcing New World's premium positioning while tapping into growing demand for convenience.

Pak’nSave: proudly no-frills

Warehouse-style stores, products stacked high on pallets and straightforward merchandising all send the same message: we're here to help you spend less. No one will pack your bags for you. Everything about the store reinforces its promise of delivering the lowest prices possible.

Discount retailers are often expected to compromise on fresh, but that wasn't the case at Pak’nSave Wairau. The department creates an immediate impression through the sheer volume of produce displayed, with abundant stacks of fruit and vegetables reinforcing the retailer's value credentials. The assortment is broader than many discount formats, spanning everyday staples through to seasonal and speciality lines, while pricing remains highly competitive.

Woolworths: making grocery shopping easier

Woolworths occupies a different space in New Zealand's grocery market. It focuses on making everyday shopping easier through a broad own-brand range and a convenient shopping experience. Some stores, such as Mount Eden, also include a pharmacy, adding another reason to visit.

Its biggest point of difference is online. From home delivery and Direct to Boot to personalised offers through Everyday Rewards, Woolworths has built one of New Zealand's strongest digital ecosystems. Online now accounts for 16% of sales, supported by strong growth in same day services. As more shoppers combine physical and online shopping, this investment in convenience is becoming an increasingly important competitive advantage.

Four Square: the convenience mission

These are neighbourhood stores, built around life's smaller missions - picking up milk, grabbing ingredients for dinner or buying something on the way home.

My visit to Four Square Eden Terrace showed just how far the convenience format has evolved. Located on the edge of Auckland's business district, the store has been designed around the needs of busy urban shoppers. Alongside everyday grocery essentials is a strong food-to-go offer, including freshly made sandwiches, ready meals, coffee and snacks that cater to commuters, office workers and apartment residents.

Despite its compact footprint, the store feels spacious and well-curated, with an assortment that balances convenience with quality. Opened in 2023 by a local owner-operator with a background in both grocery and foodservice, it reflects Four Square's ambition to become more than a neighbourhood supermarket.

The lesson I took home

New Zealand has one of the clearest grocery architectures in the world. Every banner knows exactly who it serves, and customers know exactly what to expect. There is remarkably little overlap compared with markets like Australia, the UK or the US.

When shoppers instantly know what your brand stands for, you've already won half the battle.
