The agenda to solve this long-standing issue is wide-ranging, but, targeted towards 12 “missions” focussed on improving the productivity, public services, and local pride of the country as a whole. These “missions” are to be quantifiable and will have legal status, through the Levelling-up and Regeneration Bill.
A major transfer of power from central government to local areas will be the key mechanism in driving the agenda. Building on the devolution seen across major cities such as Manchester, every local area in England will be offered the opportunity to have the highest level of devolution, if desired.
Throughout the report, considerable reference is made to the National Food Strategy, due to be released over Q1 2022. As part of the levelling-up white paper, it has been confirmed that there will be a pilot of the Community Eatwell program, listed in the National Food Strategy recommendations.
IGD will continue to monitor the progress of the bill through parliament and the outcomes of the “missions”.
