Food Strategy: An update from DEFRA

23 June 2025

An update from DEFRA on the continuing Food Strategy discussions

Food System Discussions

Over the past month, and continuing this month, food strategy officials have been presenting at a number of forums to seek more detailed insights from stakeholders and provide an overview of current thinking.

In addition, citizens from the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission’s ‘The Food Conversation’ recently met with the Food Foundation’s Food Ambassadors to discuss the food strategy and begin planning their own workshops with a wider group of citizens later in the month.

We have also just completed a series of deep dives with academic experts from across the food system, looking at the four pillars of the food strategy, the solutions available to us, and how we can continue to work in partnership across government to deliver those positive outcomes.

Multi-stakeholder Workshops

In our last email, we shared the insights from burograph which were taken from the from the multi-stakeholder workshops, held in collaboration with the Institute for Grocery Distribution. Our team has now been working to analyse the broader outputs shared during the discussions and considering how they will inform the development of the food strategy moving forward.

Food Strategy Advisory Board

The Food Strategy Advisory Board recently had its third meeting and are due to meet again later this month. Further information on the board, including membership, terms of reference and meeting minutes, can now be found here

What’s next?

We will continue to share updates on progress of the food strategy with you as we move towards a food strategy announcement in the summer. The food strategy is going to be an on-going programme of change, so we will be in touch with further opportunities to input when they arise.
