Kantar’s Worldpanel service reports that grocery retail sales in the 12 weeks ending 27 December 2020 were up 11.4% on the same period in 2019, with December being a record month.

All major grocery retailers performed strongly, with Kantar attributing this to closure of foodservice and hospitality over the Christmas period, coupled with a degree of household stockpiling ahead of EU Exit.

Ocado was the fastest-growing operator, with sales up 37% year-on-year, benefiting from continued strong interest in online shopping.

The COVID-19 crisis is now approaching one year old and grocery sales growth may drop off sharply as annual comparables become much tougher.
