Economics – 41% of larger businesses report trouble recruiting

Labour challenges continue to dominate the operational agenda for UK businesses, including those in the food and consumer goods industry.

Labour challenges continue to dominate the operational agenda for UK businesses, including those in the food and consumer goods industry.

The latest ONS research shows that 12% of all businesses report having job vacancies that were unusually hard to fill.

However, with the smallest businesses (0-9 employees) excluded from the sample, the proportion with difficulties increases to 41%.

Reasons for trouble recruiting include:

  • Lack of qualified applicants (53% of businesses with hard-to-fill vacancies)

  • Lack of applicants overall (46%)

  • Reduced number of EU applicants(18%)

  • Uncompetitive pay (16%)
