B:bot, an alternative approach to RVM technology

23 June 2026

Exploring B:bot’s RVM technology, reducing logistics complexity and signalling alternative directions for return systems.

At EuroShop 2026, as Deposit Return Schemes continue to be introduced and scaled across several markets, we spoke with numerous Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) providers. Among them, French provider B:bot stood out for taking a different approach to handling returned materials.

B:bot’s concept centres on on-site shredding of PET bottles, combined with high-density storage and sorting at source. The approach simplifies downstream logistics and addresses the cost and complexity of transporting large volumes of low-density packaging, an important challenging aspect of DRS operations.

While the current UK DRS implementation has been designed around conventional compacting models and dedicated logistics for compacted containers, including collection processes that can further densify compacted bottles during transport, b:bot illustrates an alternative approach that reduces the operational burden for stores by simplifying in-store handling, storage and collection needs.

Although shredding-at-source is not currently part of the planned UK operational framework, this is mainly linked to the logistics and material-flow architecture chosen for the first phase of implementation. B:bot’s deployment in France, with around 1,200 machines in operation, shows how a dedicated logistics model for shredded PET can operate at scale, supported by a traceability model adapted to this approach.

Combined with a highly visible user interface to create an engaging return experience, B:bot’s compact footprint and automated processing also illustrate how suppliers are differentiating within an increasingly competitive RVM market.
