ONS has been examining the issue of on-shelf availability for food and other consumer goods, working in association with Kantar.
The latest data was based on visits to 288 stores in 130 locations across the UK. Stock levels were assessed visually by the researchers, so data should be used with caution.
Overall, 2% of items showed “no” stock during the study period, with a further 9% showing “low” stock levels.
Stock levels were highly variable, however. Best stock levels were in beer, with the worst in frozen turkey and sparkling water.
In other recent ONS research, about 12% of shoppers questioned said that they had “brought forward” some Christmas purchases, with food being the most common item.
