New ONS data shows that total UK food waste is declining, gradually, in the long term.
Key points are as follows:
Households make up 70% of UK food waste (the remainder comes from businesses – data does not include on-farm waste)
In 2018, the latest year for which data is available, household food waste amounted to about 143kg per person
Household food waste in 2018 was 9.5 million tonnes, down 15% since 2007.
54% of respondents said that they actively tried to avoid food waste in 2020 - a quarter said that this was in order to help limit climate change, the rest did so for other reasons
