ONS has released results of research into working habits and preferences in the post-Covid period. It is based on surveys carried out in April and May 2021.
In this research, 10% of workers said that they normally worked from home before Covid arrived. Of the other 90%, who did have a regular workplace, about half now expect to work from home in future, at least sometimes.
There is a clear a bias towards home working amongst better-paid respondents, presumably professional “knowledge” workers such as lawyers or consultants, who may work from home more easily than manual workers (Table 7).
The major benefit identified from home working was improved “work – life balance”, noted by 65% of respondents. However, 45% of respondents also felt that working from home made it harder to co-ordinate with colleagues.
