Virtual Volunteering
Virtual Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to take part in IGD’s employability programmes. You’ll help young people and unemployed adults, develop their skills for work and learn about the range of jobs available in our industry. Your support is vital to help people of all backgrounds, increase their awareness of, and attraction to the industry. Through virtual events, taking part has never been easier, and enables us to support thousands of people with your help.

What's involved

Professional facilitators deliver each of our virtual events. As a volunteer from industry, your role is to answer questions about your job, your route into the industry and share your advice and insights.

Questions include:

  • Insight into your job role – describe a typical day in your job?
  • Showcase your skills – what skills do you use and need, to be successful in your role?
  • What journey did you take from school, to where you are now?
  • What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self?

All our events are interactive and participants are able to submit their own questions throughout. These are reviewed and asked by the facilitator as participants are not visible.

Before your event, we’ll arrange a video call to brief you and check your video connection.

School Workshop Programme

IGD has delivered workshops to thousands of young people, providing them with structured opportunities to spend quality time with industry professionals. We remain committed to providing meaningful interactions that help young people develop their employability skills and our virtual workshops do just that!

These one-hour interactive webinars help young people across the UK, to gain insight into the diverse range of roles and the skills needed within our industry. Most importantly, they help young people understand how to develop their employability skills and feel prepared for the world of work.

Our workshops are delivered by an experienced facilitator and feature up to four professionals from across the industry. Volunteers provide insight into their job, their experiences of work life and the skills they use.

Sessions consist of activities and Q&A lead by the facilitator – no advance preparation is required from industry professionals.

Volunteer for our Virtual Work Experience Programme

Across the year we will host 4 work experience weeks, each comprising of 5 daily masterclasses, lasting 90 minutes. These weeks are open to school students, education leavers and young unemployed people. The programme provides a deep dive into the industry, as well as the opportunity for attendees to develop their skills, build their confidence and take part in submitting a project to gain hands-on experience.

Volunteers are asked to commit to just one 90-minute masterclass and are required to have relevant job roles in the areas of:

  • Sales & Marketing
  • Engineering
  • IT & Digital
  • HR, Learning & Development, Recruitment, Early Careers
  • Executive or senior leadership teams

A professional facilitator delivers each masterclass. Some minimal preparation is required, and you’ll be invited to attend a briefing call and rehearsal ahead of the event.

Please contact the team at [email protected] if you have any questions about taking part.

Why volunteer?

Virtual volunteering provides you with the opportunity to support people looking to progress into employment, to share with them your passion for your work and to help support them to develop the skills they need to succeed in the workplace. We know you’ll have a great time, but you’ll also make a difference!

Through IGD, professionals like myself have the opportunity to share experiences and knowledge in order to help young people think and plan what they want to do in the future. It’s easy to do, engaging, and to know you can reach out to so many young people and hopefully plant a seed of excitement or opportunity, is a rewarding experience for all.
