Foodservice businesses reopening, but performance is suffering

Date : 21 July 2020

New data on the economic impact of the coronavirus emergency shows that UK foodservice and accommodation businesses are beginning to re-open although, with 48% still on “hold”, the situation is still far from normal.

As of 15-28 June, 51% of foodservice and accommodation businesses surveyed by ONS were trading and 48% were closed temporarily.

This is an improvement on the previous wave of research conducted on 01-14 June, when equivalent numbers were 47% and 53% respectively.

Financial performance remains questionable however – most foodservice and accommodation businesses report reduced turnover for the time of year and higher cost as a result of new safety measures.
