In March, Government temporarily relaxed rules on MOT tests for motor vehicles as part of the response to the coronavirus emergency. This measure is now ending, and mandatory testing is being reintroduced.
Small vehicles - cars, vans, and motorbikes will need a MOT certificate from 01 August (if they are more than 3 years old).
Drivers with a MOT due date before 1 August will still receive a 6-month exemption from testing. However, all vehicles must continue to be properly maintained and kept in a roadworthy condition.
The Department for Transport estimates that around 90% of the usual testing capacity is now available.
Tests for large or commercial vehicles – buses, HGVs, and trailers – will be available from 04 July. MOT exemptions for these vehicles work in a slightly different way, follow the link for details.
