Changes to COVID-19 restrictions

The government has confirmed that England will move to Step 4 of the roadmap in England on 19 July. This will see the lifting of most restrictions including ending the 1m+ rule on social distancing and removing the legal obligation on face coverings, although guidance will be in place to suggest where people might choose to wear them.

In Scotland, the First Minister is due to announce today an update on whether restrictions can be eased further on 19 July. The First Minister of Wales will be announcing any changes in restrictions on Wednesday. Regulations are due to be reviewed in Northern Ireland soon.

Changes to self-isolation in England

The government has announced that fully vaccinated individuals and under 18s will no longer need to self-isolate from 16 August should they be identified as a close contact of someone with COVID-19.

Labour shortages update

With rising COVID-19 case numbers, businesses have raised concerns about increased number of employees being advised to self-isolate for up to 10 days, following close contact with a device that later reported a positive Covid test result.

Industry has asked for more flexibility in how the Test and Trace system works for food industry workers.

IGD continues to hear widespread reports of challenges relating to a shortage of HGV drivers as well as broader labour availability issues

There are reports that the government is looking at creating a short-term visa scheme for foreign lorry drivers.

Relaxation of driver’s hours

The Department for Transport has announced a temporary relaxation of driver’s hours until 8 August 2021. While welcoming this move, industry representatives have raised concerns that this date may need to be extended further to take account of peak demand periods e.g., to include more holidays in the UK, the new school term and possible impact of further changes to border controls for businesses dealing with the EU. See our key dates section.
