About this Output

About this Guide

Working with representatives from leading retailers, manufacturers, wholesalers and third parties, the ECR UK Product & Packaging Waste workgroup has created this online resource to:

  •  provide a practical support guide
  • challenge some of the traditional ways of looking at waste
  • demonstrate some of the many ways that waste can be reduced
  • help companies minimise their waste and better manage any waste that is unavoidable

product packaging waste symbolsThis guide focuses on supply chain waste reduction from factory in-gate to till. The guide doesn’t address harvest or household waste reduction. The guide focuses on product – mainly food – waste because good content is available on-line about the recent great work to light-weight packaging.

The aims of the ECR UK Product and Packaging Waste Workgroup in preparing material for this guide are to:

  • Provide a one-stop-shop making it easier for businesses to access information to help them reduce supply chain waste, and
  • Encourage companies to collaborate with trade partners to reduce waste. Only by businesses working together can overall supply chain waste be reduced; avoiding waste just being shifted along the chain.

New for 2013

The “Internal Responsibility Matrices” Section 3 of the guide is new this year. They are a framework of responsibilities and key performance indicators by role type guiding any supplier, wholesaler, retailer or food service firm to prevent supply chain waste within their business. They will help you:

  • Ensure that internal functions are aligned and focused on preventing supply chain waste
  • Deploy and sustain a coordinated approach to preventing supply chain waste within our own organisations

The Responsibility Matrices are focused on approach – not on specific solutions, a start point for action – not exhaustive checklists, and not direct education tools but a platform for these.

Also new this year is the free partnering service WastePreventConnect
