| Exploring how shoppers’ attitudes towards packaging and recycling can influence purchase behaviour |

With more than 5 million tonnes of food and drink packaging entering the UK waste stream in 2006, the Government has responded by focusing on reducing the impact of packaging on the environment. In response, manufacturers and retailers are undertaking their own packaging reduction initiatives.
While the rate of recycling or composting household waste has risen from 7% in 1997 to 27% in 2006, the target is to reach 40% by 2010. Many are looking to the reduction and recycling of packaging as making a significant contribution to the green agenda.
With many shopping decisions made at the point of purchase, packaging plays a significant role in the success of many brands and products. Alongside this shoppers are grappling with issues of the environment, carbon footprints, council recycling schemes, food health scares and an increasing desire for on pack information and clear labelling.
