In 1909 it took 10 minutes of manual labour to earn you enough to buy one egg. Today it takes just two minutes on national minimum wage. Our industry has come a long way since IGD was formed a century ago.
This video highlights just some of the changes that we have seen. The food and grocery industry is truly world-class, providing a huge number of jobs, and contributing a great deal to GDP. We would like to thank all our members for their support during a century of progress, and we hope you enjoy the video which was first screened at our special centenary Convention in October 2009.
(With thanks to the Grocer archive, the Sainsbury’s Archive at the Museum of London, the Museum of English Rural Life, and all the companies that have contributed images to help us with this production)
