IGD is helping to increase understanding the complexity of water in the grocery supply chain.
Water is a key resource in the grocery supply chain, whether we use it to water crops, wash vegetables, for laundry, cooking and personal hygiene. In many ways water is the key link to many other issues of sustainability; energy, social and economic. The development of our work on water is endorsed by the IGD Policy Issues Council.
To support understanding of this issue IGD has developed a programme to increase knowledge and awareness of water. This began with the production of a 'Water in your Supply Chain', a directory listing over 60 organisations engaged in water-related issues that impact the UK grocery supply chain.

During 2010 IGD also developed a comprehensive guide highlighting:
- The complexity of water
- The volumes of water embedded in products
- How to assess the impact of water in grocery supply chains
- Tips on managing water at each phase of the supply chain
- A perspective of a future water-constrained world

During 2011 IGD aims to take forward its knowledge and experience and apply this to a specific UK watershed. This project will look at some of the technical and non-technical issues to water management and understand local opportunities and challenges of better water stewardship.
