Distribution Centres (DC) are warehouses or other specialised buildings, which are stocked with products to be redistributed to individual stores.
DCs will have different functions depending on the type of product that is stored, examples include ambient, chilled, fresh, secure, or frozen.
DCs are the foundation of most supply networks as they allow a single location to distribute a vast volume and range of products. They allow for the delivery of product from Manufacturer or Supplier, and the efficient supply to stores through the storage and consolidated picking of product.
A typical retail distribution network operates through national and regional Distribution Centres within a given geography. Many retailers own and run their own distribution networks, whilst others may outsource this function to dedicated logistics firms that coordinate the distribution of products for a number of companies.
