Delivering guidance on intake, status and best practice for micronutrient fortification
Micronutrients, including vitamins and minerals, are essential for health. They are required in very small amounts to enable the cells of the body to carry out vital functions.
Although most people living in the UK have adequate intakes of micronutrients, some people and groups are not eating and drinking enough. The food and grocery industry can play a positive role in helping these consumers to meet their nutritional needs.
The current focus on reduction of salt, saturated fat, sugar and energy content of foods may have an impact on micronutrient contents as well. This needs to be considered given that some groups within the population have poor intakes and/or status of a range of micronutrients.
