Dairy producers supplying liquid milk to Sainsbury’s have been taking part in a ground-breaking initiative to reduce the carbon footprint of their farming operations. By using a new innovative carbon footprinting tool, the 325 farmers in the Sainsbury’s Dairy Development Group (SDDG) have significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions from their farms over the past two years. They have also become more efficient and reduced their costs of production. The scheme is the first ever carbon reduction model to be certified by the Carbon Trust for use in animal agriculture, and is delivering real environmental and economic sustainability in the dairy sector.
