The total UK food industry is a vital employer comprising many different roles and specialities.

It provides more than 3.5m jobs – that's 13% of UK employment, or one in every seven jobs. In farming alone, there are around 327,000 farm businesses in the UK, providing 535,000 workforce jobs. And our workforce is highly skilled.

Labour productivity in UK food & drink manufacturing, measured in terms of output per hour, has risen 34% over the last 10 years vs 14% for the economy as a whole.

Concerned at high levels of youth unemployment and driven by the desire to recruit capable people, now and in the future, the food and grocery industry launched, under the auspices of IGD, an Employability Pledge last November. This commits the industry to build on a range of activities that will help thousands of people develop skills and experience. IGD hosted a Skills and Employability Summit on June 22nd which brought together companies from across the food and grocery supply chain, Government and other key stakeholders to showcase existing initiatives, share emerging best practice, identify sources of practical help and guidance and to agree priority actions for the future.
