SurfUnileverPersilBackground

While packaging plays an important role in protecting products and ensuring that they arrive home safely, Unilever continues to look for ways to reduce unnecessary packaging.

One product in particular that has done this is Persil Small and Mighty. The product was reformulated by scientific experts so that the same results could be achieved when washing, but it also meant that the powerful formulation required less dosage and therefore less packaging.

How the issue was tackled

Unilever was the first manufacturer in the UK to launch a new ground breaking 2x concentrated liquid laundry detergent. The new Small and Mighty concentrate is significantly smaller than current liquid products, so they are easier to carry, take up less storage space in the home and can handle 20 washes. Consequently, this means you'll only need one small cap of liquid to handle each load of washing. The concentrated liquid detergent was launched across both Persil and Surf and has helped Unilever to continue driving the laundry market.

Benefits and impacts

Environmental sustainability is key and is increasingly visible in both the media and government’s agenda. Small and Mighty uses a significant 40% less packaging compared to its dilute counterparts, reducing the amount of plastic in the supply chain.

A key benefit from resolving the issue is that Small and Mighty’s smaller bottle is lighter and more consumer friendly.

An additional benefit to the consumer is that just one 35ml cap is powerful enough to clean an entire wash load versus the 75ml dosing of the current 1.5ltr dilute product.

Not only does the product save on packaging but it also reduces the volume of detergents transported around the country and thus decreases the carbon emissions and pollution put into the atmosphere.

Advice to others

You must consider that packaging is part of the product you are selling, so when looking to reduce the packaging waste, think about changes to the product format that could enable this.
