IGD Guidelines on packaging legibility were initially published in 1994 in close collaboration with industry and have continued to be used as a reference source for best practice. However, in light of consumer demand for more legible information, changes in legal requirements and digital technology, a number of stakeholders suggested a major revision to this piece of work would be timely.
These revised and extended Packaging Legibility Guidelines provide updated and revised direction on how to improve the legibility of text presented on packaging. In addition, this extended version also includes recommendations for food sold loose over the counter and food sold by caterers together with a section on how to implement best practice.
The Guidelines focus on the following key facets of legibility:
- Text Layout
- Type Size
- Type Font Titles and Headings
- Colour Print Finishes
- Functional Icons
Developed by an IGD working group consisting of representatives from retail, manufacturing, Government, a design agency, food service and consumer organisations, the Guidelines are focused on advising how best to improve clarity of information provided to the consumer.
