As part of the Year of Food and Farming, IGD was commissioned to conduct research into farmers’ skills. In summary, the report shows that:
- There is an absolute mismatch between the number of students graduating from agricultural colleges and the needs of the industry
- Farmers’ customers want to see greater emphasis put on skills which reflect broader business and environmental challenges
- Technical farming skills have to be combined with employability skills and employment practices to have maximum impact on farm performance
