WHAT ARE RSS FEEDS?

News feeds are an increasingly popular way of bringing people together with the information they want from the internet.

Often referred to as RSS feeds (Really Simple Syndication), they allow you to identify the content you like and have it delivered directly to you.

Think of your daily newspaper - you can choose which title to buy, but beyond that the content is set.

With news feeds, you could take your news from the BBC, your sport from the Telegraph, your business from Reuters and so on.

There is a whole world of topics for which you can find news feeds (the word 'news' being a misnomer for many!).

Wherever you see the icon below around the web, this means you will find a News Feed which you can take advantage of!

Retail Analysis is offering all readers free constantly updated feeds of stories from our news service. The analysis behind the headlines will, as always, be available to Retail Analysis subscribers only. (How do I subscribe?)

How does it work?

You'll need something called a news reader (sometimes called an 'aggregator'). There are many different versions - a good number are accessed using the Internet. Yet this is not the only option - you can also use your email programme, a mobile phone or a PDA. Many news readers are available as free, downloadable applications. All allow you to display and subscribe to the news feeds you want and many will alert you to new content as it is published. See box (right) for a list of news readers.

You may find that your company intranet has such a service. If so, contact your IT department to request Retail Analysis news feeds to be added.

Once you have chosen a news reader, you 'point' it to the content you want. To do this:

  • Towards the top of this page is a list of all the feeds we currently offer.
  • Select a news feed and copy the link to its right by left-clicking it, as shown.

  • Copying News Feed Links

  • Paste this address into your news reader program / website where prompted for feed address, xml address or similar.
  • Alternatively, you'll find RSS logos at key locations around the site. Right click on a logo, select 'Copy Shortcut' and paste into your news reader. For example, if you copy the shortcut from the logo on the Tesco hubpage, you will get the address for the Tesco RSS feed.
  • RSS on Retail Analysis

  • A further option is if you are already subscribed to one of the four web news reader services listed at the top right of this page, you can subscribe to our main 'all stories' news feed by clicking on the appropriate logo.

Getting Started

This section shows you how to set yourself up with a web news reader service - this is aimed at someone who has not used such a service before.

One news reader that Retail Analysis users may wish to try is Bloglines (www.bloglines.com). It is web-based, which means you can access your chosen news feeds from any internet-enabled PC in the world. It is also free, and easy to use. (Please note that IGD does not endorse any particular website - see note elsewhere on this page.)

1) Sign up for the free online News Feed service Bloglines at http://www.bloglines.com/register. You will need to give an email address for this purpose.

2) When registered and logged-in, on the left hand window click on the My Feeds tab and click add:

My Feeds Tab

3) Copy the following News Feed address (or indeed any from the list above) into the subscribe field in the right-hand window:

http://www.igd.com/analysis/rss/ra_rss.xml

Subscribe box

4) You'll see an options page which you can leave as it is and submit. Retail Analysis will now appear as a feed in the left-hand window. Click on this and you can begin to read the stories!

The way in which news feeds are displayed varies greatly between newss. However, if you are successful setting up the feed you might see something like this (from Bloglines):
